Green Gifting Impact Standard

The specification we hold ourselves to, written so another organisation could implement it and get the same answer from the same inputs.

Methodologyv1.2· current

§1 Scope

This standard covers physical gift products sold to consumers or organisations. It addresses cradle-to-customer impacts: material extraction and processing, packaging, and outbound logistics. It explicitly excludes the use phase and end-of-life beyond the recyclability adjustment defined in §4.

§2 Required inputs

InputUnitObligation
Primary materialfactor keyRequired
Net product massgramsRequired
Packaging specificationfactor keyRequired
Origin to destination distancekmRequired
Transport moderoad | airRequired
Recyclability in destination marketbooleanRequired
Category baselinekg CO₂eRequired, published per category
Secondary materialsfactor key + massOptional, improves precision

§3 Computation

gis-formula
net_co2e = Σ(material_factor_i × mass_kg_i)
         + packaging_factor
         + (transport_factor × tonne_km)
         − recyclability_credit

GIS      = clamp(0, 100, 100 − (net_co2e ÷ category_baseline) × 62)
Implementations MUST clamp the score to the range 0–100 and MUST record the factor-set version used.

§4 Recyclability adjustment

Where packaging is recyclable through mainstream collection in the destination market, a credit of 15% of gross CO₂e MAY be applied. The credit MUST NOT be applied on the basis of theoretical recyclability where no collection infrastructure exists, and MUST NOT exceed the gross figure.

§5 Confidence and disclosure

Every published score MUST carry a confidence tier — verified, supplier-declared or estimated — determined by the weakest input in the calculation. The tier MUST appear wherever the score appears, at comparable visual weight.

Scores MUST NOT be presented as measured emissions, and derived loyalty rewards MUST NOT be described as offsets, removals or neutrality claims.

§6 Conformance

Reproducible

Given identical inputs and factor-set version, two implementations produce the same score.

Versioned

Every published score names the specification version and the factor-set version it used.

Auditable

The factor table and its sources are published, not held privately.
